Summary | 03779: mario. zip; suprmrio. zip: these games have issues | ||||
Description |
I only update Mame once every few years, and am exhausted when I have to track down newer versions of roms. However this time, it is way worse than before. The classic Mario Bros. that used to use samples, has been converted to include the samples in the main rom, however somehow in the process, not only has the entire sound of the game become muffled, the samples also somehow got messed up, for instance when mario walks, it sounds horrible! Don't know where the quality control is at, but it's lacking. Please put back the sampling option if this cannot be corrected. Next up is Vs. Super Mario Bros. which I could not get to work at all in the up to date MAME. It doesn't error out, but actually starts to work and appears to do like a quick system check, but then just goes to a blank screen. I have a ton of other roms that used to work, but are now erroring out due to missing items. I haven't tried .137 yet, but I have a feeling that at least the first problem has not been solved? Thanks for your time and for an amazing service that is MAME. Tim |

These issues are not bugs. - Mario has new discrete emulation which sounds more like the arcade than ever before. As you noticed, there is an issue with the running sound which is already logged as 03679. Other than that, it's more accurate and authentic than samples could ever be. Samples are a hack at best and will not return. This discrete sound was added in 0.122u5 and it's been critiqued against pcb recordings many times. If you desire the old sound, use the old MAME version. - Super Mario (suprmrio) should work fine for your reported version. If you are using 0.136, it still would not work, as it was fixed in 0.136u1 (refer to 03573). Closing as these are duplicated issues that are resolved or are already in system. You must search this site completely if you are considering reporting about future issues. Confirm with friend or frequent a MAME forum and ask about issues there |

Yeah a lot of the old samples that were about were 'improved' to sound better than the real thing. Extra effects added to simulate how the cabinet would modify the sound, and other general improvements. Aside a few issues the new emulation should be a lot closer to what the PCB outputs, even if it sounds 'muffled'. There are people who will claim that the PSX games should look like they do in Zinc etc. too, but 'better' looking / sounding isn't always more accurate. |
